Welcome to First Grade!
Hello, my name is Mrs. Pam Taylor. I will be your child’s teacher this year. I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades and also Reading as the Reading/Resource Teacher.
Reading
Learning to read is a lot of hard work and takes a lot of practice. Your child will practice reading strategies in Literacy Work Stations they were taught during their Guided Reading Instruction time. They will also write about their reading during Reader’s Workshop to reinforce the Word Work they are learning through their reading. As part of Balanced Literacy first graders will write about, talk about, and at times act out the stories they are reading.
Research shows that 1st graders need to read (and/or be read to) a million words this year to be ready for 2nd grade. That means they need to read (and/or be read to) for 20 minutes every night. The reading they do at school combined with the reading they do at night equals a million words.
Homework Policy
Homework is meant to reinforce and practice the skills they are taught in school. Your child will receive a homework folder with a Reading Log (to track their million words) to be completed and returned every Friday.
Class Discipline
In first grade respect, responsibility, honesty and caring are expected. If a child causes a problem for himself/herself then they are expected to fix the problem in a respectful, responsible, honest and caring manner. If they are not able to do that then I will fix the problem and the child will receive a consequence appropriate to the problem that was caused. Students will receive detentions for every fourth tardy and for reaching the red level on the discipline scale. The discipline scale consists of 5 levels:
· Green is good and the goal is to stay on green
· White is a warning
· Yellow is the second warning with the loss of 5 minutes of recess
· Orange is the third warning with the loss of 10 minutes of recess
· Red is the loss of recess and a referral for a detention
Breakfast, Recess, and Birthday Treats
Breakfast will be served mornings from 7:45 to 7:55 and will be eaten in the room. If they arrive after 7:55 they will not receive breakfast. Snack breaks have been eliminated due to the addition of breakfast.
Recess will be outside so dress for the weather. If it is raining or too cold we will stay indoors.
Birthday treats are always welcome. Let me know if you are going to provide a treat for your child’s birthday so I can give you an exact count. Birthday party invitations are also welcome if there is an invitation for everybody in the class.
Parent Communication
I love to hear from parents. Please feel free to contact me before or after school at 414-463-4040 or email me at taylorp@northwestlutheran.org.
God’s richest blessings to you and your family,
Pam Taylor
